In this blog, I’m going to tell you about| Top Selling Gaming Consoles of All Time
Some home consoles sell tens of millions of units globally, demonstrating the lucrative nature of the video game industry. The success of each gaming console’s sales is a good indicator of what was successful about that generation. It’s a good way to gauge a manufacturer’s success while also determining which features or concepts gamers preferred and whether or not a console has gimmicky features.
The PlayStation 2 from Sony has long held the record for being the most popular video gaming console ever. The PlayStation 4 will end its lifespan tens of millions of units behind the top spot, despite its enormous sales success. And while Switch has also maintained incredible sales momentum and is still a long way from the top, it is currently getting close to PS4’s lifetime sales total.
157.68 Million Units
A never-ending list of successful exclusive games for the PS2 were also released. Final Fantasy X and X-2 on the PlayStation gave the Final Fantasy series a makeover. For the crossover video games Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts 2, Square Enix even succeeded in enlisting Disney. Over the course of the PS2’s existence, 157.68 million consoles were sold.
154 Million Units
The Nintendo DS, the all-time best-selling handheld console, was a nod to some Game & Watch models’ vintage dual-screen design while also advancing Nintendo’s range of portable gaming consoles. With its two-screen design and focus on touch controls, the system sold more than 150 units in its existence and connected with customers in a manner that no other console could.
Over the course of its seven-year existence, the Nintendo DS underwent a number of changes. The DS light and DS XL models would dominate the market and pave the way for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011, despite the fact that the first model wasn’t very well regarded.
Nintendo GameBoy/GameBoy Color
118 Million Units
Although there were technically portable gaming consoles available before to the GameBoy, Nintendo’s first handheld system that supported swappable cartridges was a huge success and contributed to the expansion of a market that the company had helped to establish with its Game & Watch series.
With well over 110 million units sold and theoretically remaining in production until 2003, the GameBoy dominated the handheld gaming market in large part because of classic titles like Super Mario Land and Tetris. The GameBoy Color would extend its life, and Nintendo wouldn’t introduce a real replacement until 2001, a full twelve years after the system’s initial introduction.

In addition, the PlayStation 4 has a continuous stream of critically acclaimed exclusive games like Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, and the Uncharted series continuation, which helped maintain PlayStation’s position as the premier gaming destination. The PS4 has sold more than 117 million units so far, and it’s still on the market, so the number will probably keep rising even though it will probably be phased out soon.

The Nintendo Switch has sold over 100 million units in its short time on the market—just over five years—and appears to be headed for all-time record status as the most popular gaming platform. The console still has a few excellent years left because it was only released in 2017. The Switch is a must-have for any lover of Nintendo because it includes classic games from the Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, and Metroid series.
The Switch is well known for its adaptability, but it’s also become well known for emphasizing cooperative gameplay, enabling friends and families to play together. Additionally, the system is certain to smash some all-time sales records in the coming years with its wide variety of versions and collectors editions—not to mention the brand-new Switch OLED model.

Some players laughed when the concept of a motion-controlled gaming consoles system was initially proposed. Some believed Nintendo was acting in desperation following the disappointing sales of the GameCube, which only managed to sell 21.7 million systems, or that it was a cheap gimmick. Critics were quickly disproven, though, as the gaming consoles received a triumphant launch and went on to sell 101.53 million units.
With tens of millions of copies sold each, motion-focused titles like Wii Fit, Wii Sports, and Just Dance topped the sales rankings. In addition to the motion games, the Wii also had a number of underappreciated titles and surprise successes, such as Donkey Kong Country Returns, WarioWare Smooth Moves, and others.
87 Million Units
The PlayStation 3 was a retail catastrophe for Sony at first, though it would subsequently recover, and the lower sales are understandable given that it faced fierce competition from the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. In fact, the top 10 bestselling gaming consoles ever include all three of the major seventh-generation consoles.
Fortunately, PS-only games like Gran Turismo 5, LittleBigPlanet, and the Uncharted series helped keep the console competitive. Top-selling games like Grand Theft Auto V and The Last of Us were published in 2013, the same year the PS4 made its debut, and both enjoyed enormous late-life success. The PS3 sold about 87 million copies in total.

With 84 million units sold, the Xbox 360 has been Microsoft’s most popular gaming system to date. Microsoft commissioned Bungie to create an extensive lineup of Halo games for their new console, including Halo 3, Halo 4, Reach, and ODST, all of which sold millions of copies and contributed to the success of the 360. Microsoft recognized the crucial role Halo played in making the original Xbox a success.
However, the introduction of the Kinect motion sensor in the middle of the Xbox 360’s ten-year lifespan was one of the main factors that aided the device. In addition to Kinect Adventures! becoming the console’s best-selling game, the Kinect briefly became a cultural phenomenon and even played a significant role in Paranormal Activity 4.

The original GameBoy was a hugely popular device, but by the late 1990s, the dated technology was having a hard time keeping up with the times. The GameBoy wouldn’t get a true update until the GameBoy Advance was released in 2001, despite Nintendo having already issued a pseudo-upgrade in the shape of the GameBoy Color. The original GameBoy was a hugely popular device, but by the late 1990s, the dated technology was having a hard time keeping up with the times. The GameBoy Advance, with power roughly comparable to the SNES, was a haven for sidescrolling action games and became the platform for numerous iconic Mario & Luigi, Castlevania, and Pokémon games. A few other significant changes were also made to the system, the best of which were a backlight and a practical clamshell design.
