Top 10 Best Horror Games: Scariest titles to play right now

In this blog, I’m going to tell you about the | Top 10 Best Horror Games: Scariest titles to play right now.

The best horror games thrill us and make us feel alive in the face of a terrifying monster that really wants us dead. Many of us delight in the gimmicks of horror, whether it is the suspense that comes with anticipating a jump scare, running from a monster while your heart races, or turning around and slaying some pretty depraved animals.

Horror games come in a variety of types, and this list will highlight the best ones. For many years, Japanese horror games dictated the direction of the genre. Upcoming remakes of beloved titles, like Resident Evil 4 or Silent Hill 2, will demonstrate to new audiences how this particular style of psychological horror, with recognizable characters and tense resource management, influenced an entire generation of games.

Today’s best horror games have new tools to scare you, letting you feel the fear in multiplayer with friends, or by stripping out inventories entirely to focus on immersing you in a more cinematic experience.

There are more games to choose from than ever before, so let’s make sure you chose right with our list of the best horror games.

Little Nightmares

Little Nightmares

Available on: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

Little Nightmares is a puzzle-platform horror adventure game developed by Tarsier Studios and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment.

In Little Nightmares, you control a young girl called Six, who must make her way through a terrifying environment that is too huge for her and is home to a broad variety of enormous and bizarre monsters.

Since Six is only a young girl, you sneak by them rather than engage in combat with these monsters. Being hunted by creatures while navigating challenging platforming portions adds stress.

Little Nightmares is a fantastic horror game because it conveys a sense of powerlessness while making it obvious that you still have options for escaping. It takes domestic settings that are comfortable because they are known and turns them upside down by making them disgusting and dangerous for Six to travel through.

Little Nightmares makes excellent use of the fact that it is a game because utilizing children in this way in any other medium would be uncomfortable, and a shrunken protagonist would probably make us think of 90s comedy flicks rather than tense horror.

Despite being a fantastic game in and of itself, Little Nightmares’ sequel, which featured a brand-new protagonist, was unable to match the suspense of the first.

The Evil Within 2

The Evil Within 2

Available on: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Xbox One, and PS4

Developed by Tango Gameworks and released by Bethesda Softworks is the survival horror video game The Evil Within 2. The Evil Within 2 is a follow-up movie that was released globally in October 2017.

The Evil Within series comes from Shinji Mikami, the mind behind Resident Evil – and if that doesn’t give you enough reason to pick it up, its nightmarish world likely will.

The protagonist Sebastian Castellanos is never quite sure what is real and what is a terror created by his own mind in this third-person survival horror. You’ll be drawn into a world filled with bizarre and terrifying foes, combined with splashes of psychological horror.

The Evil Within aimed to bring back the genre of Japanese horror games, which were formerly commonplace but are now much less common. Mikami, a name that is synonymous with Japanese horror gaming, is the ideal candidate to bring it back. The Evil Within games succeeded in modernizing Japanese horror to make it less janky and more approachable. While Evil Within provided fresh narratives while Capcom reverted to its classic plots, the Resident Evil remakes may have garnered more attention and sales.

The Dead Space series

Dead Space

Available on: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox 360, PS3, and PC

According to numerous players, Visceral Games’ Dead Space is consistently ranked as one of the top horror games. The story begins on an abandoned space ship, which is obvious, and then takes several horrific turns. Most of these turns have zombie-like aliens waiting for them.

A new generation of horror games was introduced with Dead Space. The Western game industry replaced the Japanese horror with jump-scare-heavy titles, while Dead Space prominently drew inspiration from Ridley Scott’s Alien before Alien: Isolation had the official license.

Simple principles like an engaging story, convincing graphics, and appropriate pacing are the keys to the game’s success. For those without an Xbox Game Pass or a later-generation console, access to the games can be a little challenging. However, there are plans to rebuild Dead Space, so don’t worry.

And while we recommend the first game for the purest horror experience, its two sequels also developed the horror in different, delectable directions.

By switching from third to first person, the horror felt closer and more urgent, paving the path for a genuinely terrifying VR experience to be incorporated into the game.

Resident Evil 7 was the expansion to the horror game series we all hoped for and feared we wouldn’t get, thanks to a compelling narrative and tight gameplay. Many new fans were won over by the game’s success and the recent remakes of prior games in the series.

A game called Inside is as visually eerie as it is spooky, as tight as it is fascinating. This game shares similarities with the Little Nightmares series in that you must solve puzzles and sneak past anything that could cause you harm. Inside is a horrifyingly gorgeous and disturbing game even without distorted monsters. This is a singular experience and one of the best horror games because of the special camaraderie you develop with your little protagonist and the various threats you face together.

Alien: Isolation

Alien: Isolation

Alien: Isolation is a 2014 survival horror game developed by Creative Assembly and published by Sega.

Players are placed in the spacesuits of Amanda Ripley, Ellen Ripley’s daughter, 15 years after the events of the 1979 Ridley Scott movie.

Isolation captures the experience of watching a movie for the first time perfectly by adopting a first-person viewpoint and pitting you against a lone xenomorph that is stalking you across a huge space station in the dark. Isolation seems like you’re playing through the movie because of the atmosphere, which makes it one of the best horror games.

The makings of a contemporary horror game classic can be found when you combine the alien’s excruciatingly brilliant artificial intelligence with a riveting virtual reality experiment.

The Quarry

The Quarry

A 2022 interactive drama/horror video game called The Quarry was created by Supermassive Games and released by 2K. Nine teenage counselors are controlled by the player as they battle supernatural beings and hostile campers on their final night at Hackett’s Quarry summer camp.

Ariel Winter, David Arquette, Justice Smith, and Ted Raimi are just a few of the well-known names and horror industry veterans who appear in this interactive thriller, and their excellent performances make The Quarry enjoyable.

The Quarry serves as both a setting and a character for our heroes throughout the story. Your fast thinking and dexterity will determine whether they survive the hunt or meet a sticky end.

If you have the necessary tools, you might be able to barricade yourself in, but in essence, you know that if you’re discovered, you’re dead.

That is the horrifying premise of the game Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which also eats away at the player’s psyche if they spend too much time in the dark. Amnesia is difficult yet compelling because of the sense of powerlessness we as players experience.
