There is no better time to get forensic than when a new Call of Duty game is out; the finer points of recoil models and movement strategies all have critical relevance.
While Xbox’s acquisition of Activision rumbles on in the background, Call of Duty-Modern Warfare 2 has received more community excitement than any other previous COD release and offers the promise of an effective franchise reinvention to go along with it. After finishing the campaign and playing an excessive amount of multiplayer, we have a full review of Call of Duty-Modern Warfare 2 to share.
The Call of Duty-Modern Warfare 2 campaign made a good first impression on us. It’s a bombastic affair that leads you through a number of quickly paced set pieces one after the other and has the sensation of a squad doing what it does best.
We do believe that Infinity Ward needs to tweak the difficulty in a few areas, but it’s not a significant enough issue to ruin anything.
The multiplayer aspect of the equation is more challenging, but Modern Warfare 2 has a core that feels fantastic, with unmatched popular gunplay and recoil. Although it’s hampered at first by bugs and content deficiencies, we’re very confident that in six months this Call of Duty will be in its prime.
Call of Duty-Modern Warfare 2 Campaign
The campaign of Modern Warfare 2 begins up after the events of the first game, with Task Force 141 effectively serving as world-renown humanitarians and this time being involved in General Shepherd of the US’s search for missing missiles (a familiar name from the original Call of Duty-Modern Warfare 2).
That’s all you really want from a decent COD—a corny plot that manages to play things straight enough to get away with it, full of plot turns that don’t hold up to close examination but let the action to keep moving forward.
You can control a variety of characters in that action, including series regulars like Soap and Gaz and brand-new members of the Mexican Special Forces, all of whom are joined by legends like Captain Price and Ghost. The banter between team members as you play serves to highlight how uninspired the Vanguard script from the previous year was.
As usual, the action is cranked up, starting with straightforward infantry missions against relatively easy targets to make you feel like the elite force you are meant to be. Long automobile chases that you are totally in control of, stealth segments that include crafting, and sniper galleries that quickly turn into shootouts all contribute to the tension.
However, the abundance of enemies wearing body armor and helmets, which require absurd amounts of ammunition to destroy, adds a bitter tone. These are fine as sporadic mini-bosses, but when used in every encounter, they reach a certain point where they become tiresome and aggravating.
They add to a few odd difficulty spikes, such as a lengthy boss battle late in the plot, that give you the impression that you unintentionally chose to play the game in Veteran mode.
With images that are flavorful and diverse, the campaign makes up for that unusual mistake. Each stage in MW2 looks fantastic, from rocky woods to deserts with mountains to isolated military bases.
Call of Duty-Modern Warfare 2 has a confidence and swagger that highlights Infinity Ward’s well-deserved position as the creators of the first and best Call of Duty games.
Call of Duty-Modern Warfare 2 is an intriguing beast in terms of multiplayer; it feels viscerally connected to MW2019, yet there are obviously significant changes at work as well as some perplexing oversights.
First of all, this Call of Duty is slower than we’ve played in a long time. Slide-cancelling and other quick movement options have been removed to force players to walk more deliberately around the available areas.
You can now throw yourself into the fray with a new dolphin-dive action, although doing so pauses the discharge of your weapon and puts you in a prone posture, so the degree of absurd movement you see while playing won’t be quite as high. Meanwhile, a new ledge-hang feature seems utterly superfluous.
For what it’s worth, we think everything is wonderful. In COD, movement was out of control, and we’re looking forward to Warzone 2.0, which will debut soon after Modern Warfare 2 does.
It results in a slower, more methodical approach that, especially in modes without respawn systems, manages to resurrect some of the intensity that only Modern Warfare 2019 has really accomplished in recent years.
A brand-new, highly intriguing recoil system is introduced to this; while the guns have a kick and require some getting used to, much like in MW2019, it’s the noticeable visual recoil that is most remarkable. A heavy machine gun feels and appears as hefty and bouncy as you would expect it to in real life when you are shooting one (or a lot closer to it, anyway).
Modern Warfare 2’s dopamine-injecting progression algorithm has undergone significant adjustment in that it has become much more intricate. Here, things are more complicated than in typical COD games where you may level up as you play, unlock new weapons as you rank up, and add-ons for certain weapons as you use them.
Despite the fact that some weapons can only be unlocked after using a related weapon for a specific period of time, you can still level up and acquire new weapons. These unlock trees push you to actually try out a variety of weaponry while also giving you a separate set of goals to pursue as you play.
A recently enhanced Gunsmith system now allows you to customize your weapons exactly as you please, and it is as thorough as any aficionado could wish for. We’re mostly simply happy to see that the insane excess of Vanguard’s strategy is gone, and we’re back down to a maximum of five attachments.
Call of Duty-Modern Warfare 2 Launch issues
All of that is welcome news for COD fans, but it does so against a backdrop of some truly bizarre choices that complicated the release of Call of Duty-Modern Warfare 2.
For starters, the menu structure is unquestionably awkward and disorganized, making it challenging to discover the information you’re seeking for and making the wait between matches a stressful puzzle.
Activating an XP token (something that COD has supplied for years) leaves you without any indication of success or how much time is remaining on your countdown as an example of the UI faults at work.
Additionally, there is simply no way to view your lifetime statistics, which include playtime, kill/death ratios, and victory rates—another blatantly obvious requirement.
That’s UI, but there are some oddities on the gameplay front, too. The perk system has undergone a significant modification thanks to Infinity Ward, who have gated two perks as mid-game unlocks. This is an intriguing concept that might alter how you play even in the middle of a match.
However, with Ghost trapped behind the final barrier, early and mid-game UAVs are now immensely potent, making it nearly hard to play stealthily if other team members are sacrificing cheap kills for killstreaks. We’re curious to see how long this modification endures because it didn’t seem to be essential.
In addition, there are several flaws and anomalies, including equipment breakdowns, graphic problems, and game crashes. The ultimate tier of the gunsmith allows you to customize weapon attachments for completely original builds, although this feature is currently blocked because it wasn’t functional at launch.
While this was a nice novelty, it was also a very obvious and persistent bug that should have been fixed far before release. We’ve also spawned into matches where every player has the same attachment-free M4 assault rifle with no equipment or killstreaks.
Given how excellent the basic gameplay is, Modern Warfare 2 is not Battlefield 2042, but it is the most recent example of a pattern of sizable multiplayer games being released before they were fully prepared for the general public.

Modern Warfare 2 delivers a well-paced, varied campaign that feels like playing a great action movie. The multiplayer side of things has a solid core and we’ve no doubt it’ll be polished up in the months to come, but its state at launch is disappointing.
